Outstanding Community Organization Award

Asian/ Pacific American Heritage Association

In June 1977, Representatives Frank Horton of New York and Norman Y. Mineta of California introduced a House resolution that called upon the president to proclaim the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific Heritage Week. In May 1990, the holiday was expanded further when President George H. W. Bush designated May to be Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States in 1843.

The Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) was formed in 1992 to “promote awareness and increase understanding of the Asian/Pacific American culture and its diversity through education and celebration, focusing on May, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (APAHM), and continuing throughout the year.” To make a difference in our community, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Association (APAHA) has collaborated with various community and educational entities to provide ongoing educational, cultural and scholarship programs to the Asian/Pacific and Greater Houston communities.

As a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, APAHA’s main objectives include enhancing racial harmony in our city, promoting cross-cultural awareness, education and appreciation between and among Asian/Pacific Americans and other ethnic groups by outreaching to schools, businesses, and other institutions.

The APAHA is currently overseen by a board of twenty-eight and employs a full-time paid Executive Director. Volunteer committees are responsible for planning and implementing organizational activities.

Asian Pacific American Communities in Houston
The US Census Bureau lists over twenty-five Asian and Pacific Islander groups. Some of the largest groups in Houston are: Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipinos, Indian, Pakistani, Korean, Japanese, Cambodian, Laotian, Indonesian, Thai, Burmese, Malaysian, Taiwanese, Sri Lanka, Bangladeshi, and a variety of Pacific Islanders from the Hawaiian Islands, Polynesian Islands, and New Zealand. Recent estimates of Asian Pacific Americans in the Houston area range from 300,000 to 500,000.

Through the assistance and dedication of our volunteers and sponsors, APAHA strives to outreach to the Houston neighborhoods to build a stronger understanding of Asian and Pacific Island groups throughout this city.

FileControl Partners, Inc

I wanted to thank the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, its Board of Directors, President, Officers, and other selection committee members for honoring me with the Outstanding South Asian Entrepreneur of the Year Award. I must commend them for their hard work and thorough due diligence in reaching this decision. As we all know any award is an outcome of a collective team effort. Many of them are not here this evening, but were vital in making this award come to fruition.

For the previous recipients just like me it’s a mixed feeling of achievement, joy, happiness and humbleness.

For the ones who are embarking on their business journey or are working towards it, my humble advice would be to work hard with passion, focused energy, use your intellect, dedication and open yourself up to networking. A lot of people undermine its power, but what better organizations like SACC and OPEN (to name a few) which will provide you with the stepping platform and assist you with your current and future endeavors. Be sure to visit their websites and sign up and be part of these legacies. If not for yourself do it for your youth and next generations to come.

For the younger generation, my humble advice is — Take up one idea you believe in, make it your life – think, dream and live on that idea. Let every part of your body, be full of it. Work with honesty, passion, intellect, dedication and team effort. It may take some time but you will get eventually get there — InshAllah. By the Grace of ALLAH, this is how I did it….

I would like to thank my beautiful wife Ambreen for supporting me in where I am today! My parents for always praying for my good health, happiness and success. I also would like to thank my clients who have put their faith and trust in me in helping me achieve this success.

Finally, I will leave you with three very powerful words (besides others) from our founder Quaid –i-Azam (Unity, Faith and Discipline). I immigrated 18 years go with these three words in my mind, followed them and success was just around the corner.

Thank you SACC very much for this honor! I feel grateful, honored and humbled.
